¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás? – Yo estoy bien, ¿y tú?
Each day, you would find phrases or conversations just like this from our Spanish teacher Mrs. Doerr. Mrs. Doerr teaches elementary Spanish in the mornings and enrichment (Pre-k & Jr. K) Spanish in the afternoons. During Spanish, students learn the language, experience authentic music, create crafts in relation to the heritage, make and taste foods, learn about climate and geography, touch artifacts and get to celebrate traditions.
Why Foreign Language is Important for Young Learners?
1.) More Willing to Try a New Language
Young children are more willing to try a new language without the fear of embarrassment. They know that if they don’t understand it the first time, that they can learn in an environment where everyone is working together to understand it, often for the first time.
2.) Easier to Mimic New Sounds
From birth, children discover language naturally without having to consciously learn like adolescents and adults. These individual, natural language learning strategies help children understand Spanish at a faster rate, giving them the opportunity to imitate sounds and rules of the language themselves.
3.) It Boosts Empathy
Multilingual children are better at understanding others from different cultures, even when the words they use are not precise. In addition, not only are children learning the sounds and pronunciation, but are also learning about the culture, giving children the ability to see things from the eyes of others.
A Statement From Mrs. Doerr
“Learning a foreign language young, will enable children to become adults that are caring citizens with appreciation for people that are from other countries and cultures,” said Mrs. Doerr.
