Avoid Summer Break Screen Time by Heading Outdoors

Let’s face it, the solution to “I’m bored” 20 years ago was heading outdoors during summer break. Nowadays, it tends to be a different story featuring screen time. The first thing we grab when we get bored is our electronic devices.

Avoid Summer Break Screen Time by Heading Outdoors

At this point in the summer, we’ve probably all witnessed it: our kids are spending more time on electronic devices and less time in the Omaha outdoors. But, why should that be the case? There are plenty of benefits to spending time outdoors instead of more summer screen time.

Outdoor Time Promotes Creativity

Creativity thrives when we go outdoors. We enable our five senses, allowing us to envision scenarios and create memorable experiences.  We’ve seen it firsthand at camp. Campers use materials they find in nature, and create something using their imagination. For example, just this week, a camper found a longer stick, some string, and a shorter stick and created his own bow and arrow.

Outdoor Time Stimulates Movement

Interacting with nature usually requires movement. Whether we are walking, running, jumping, or climbing, our bodies are moving which helps to get our heart beating and our blood pumping. According to Kids Health, children and teens should get 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.

Outdoor Time Gives Us Sun

Just like plants, we need the sun to grow. Sun exposure gives us Vitamin D which, in turn, helps our bodies develop and fights off germs for a stronger immune system. Certainly it puts us in a better mood too! Don’t forget the sunscreen though-too much sun exposure can cause sunburns.

So, what are you waiting for? Use the old phrase, “get outside and play”. Better yet, go outside with them! Create mud soup, run around the bases at the baseball field, or have a picnic. The options are endless when it comes to outdoor play!
