Hands On Education at Legacy Private School Omaha

Sitting in rows of desks, keeping quiet, facing a chalkboard. Does this sound like your childhood education? Today, across the Nation, some schools are changing the landscape of education. These schools are taking a broad leap in the way students are learning, by implementing a hands-on educational approach. So, what exactly is hands-on learning and why are some schools implementing it?

Hands-On Education

Handouts, long lectures, and extensively long textbooks. Those words alone make learning sound, well, less than exciting. Hands-on learning provides students with opportunities that sitting in rows of desks and listening to lectures can not. When students interact with each other and learn together, the outcome is much greater than shoving information in our brains that we’ll later forget.

Why Schools Across the Nation are Implementing It

Some schools across the nation are implementing hands-on learning because they are noticing the results that come from it: more engaged and invested students. During hands-on learning, students are more attentive as experiences in the classroom become more appealing to explore. Just like field trips and trying new things, hands-on learning experiences are easier to recall.

Why Is Hands-On Education Not Implemented? What does Legacy School do differently?

Often a lecture-based curriculum is implemented to improve test scores. But, unlike schools that feel the pressure to increase test scores by outside sources, Legacy School Omaha focuses on each child’s educational path. Students at Legacy School take only two standardized tests a year, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. These tests map out the strengths and weaknesses that a child may have. Teachers then use this information to create hands-on learning experiences to launch each child forward in their educational journey.

Hands-On Education at Legacy School Omaha

Legacy School administration and teachers believe that a child learns best when they are constantly working together with others. Why? Because when we are working with others, it mimics a real-world situation. If you think about it, when we become an adult we learn through doing, not normally by looking through a textbook or by listening to a long lecture. We as adults, work through problems and create solutions by working together-learning by doing. When we equip children with hands-on learning experiences in a school setting, we are equipping them to work alongside others as adults.

Each day, hands-on learning experiences at Legacy School get children up and moving. This way students can discuss, interact with, and truly engage with every lesson. For example, in our Science and Nature center, each week, Legacy School students, Preschool-6th grade, engage in a full-blown Science experience. Students work together to explore each concept through experiments and hands-on projects. In other words, students are not just going through a textbook to learn information in which they will be tested on later. Also, Legacy School is situated on 11 acres of land. So, bringing lessons outside the classroom gives students a new perspective of hands-on learning.
